For years, the Riverside Sheriff Accountability Coalition (RSAC) and our allies have been advocating for the establishment of a civilian oversight commission over the Riverside County Sheriff's Department (RCSD) due to rampant jail deaths, unchecked officer misconduct and a disregard for public transparency.
Earlier this year, the Riverside County Civil Grand Jury, issued a scathing report urging the county to enact meaningful oversight over the RCSD. The Riverside County Board of Supervisors proceeded to vote and create an ad hoc committee to develop a proposal on what oversight could look like in our region. This ad hoc will be shaped of only Supervisors Medina and Spiegel, making it extremely important that the public stays engaged in their process.
To find out more about this and how you can be an advocate for oversight, please join RSAC on September 9th, 6-8 PM, at the IBEW Hall, 1605 Spruce St, Riverside, CA 92507. You will learn about what other counties have been doing, what has worked and what hasn’t. And you will find out what you can do to move this process along.
Let’s make sure our law enforcement is transparent and held accountable. The time has come for us to hold our Sheriff’s Department to account.
